About my art practice

Los Angeles, Ca

Combining the soft angles of the female form, and the bold colors of film lighting, Christina has created a way to interweave her love of figure drawing and her desire to tell stories through a single frame.

Although her subjects don’t need color correction, Christina layers physical color filters or “lighting gels” on top of charcoal portraits. Using specific colors to enhance and accentuate different portions of the faces, the sheets of polyester act as a layering agent, but not as they would if being used behind the camera; A gel works by removing certain colors - a common misconception is that gels add color to the light. If the desired frequency isn't present in the first place, a gel won't add more of the color - but they can in her pieces, altering the impact of the subject in a unique way. (Fun fact, they're called gels from the early days of theater lighting, when they were made with colored gelatin dried into thin sheets.)

Her pieces exude a vibrant romance with depth and saturation while maintaining a glimpse of the intimate moments before a shutter clicks. All are charcoal on paper, 19.5 x 25.5, and can only be sold matted and framed because of the delicacy of the adhered gels. Custom framing is available upon request.
